*Name: Stephanie Klaamas
*Origin: Toronto, Ontario
*Years In Fort McMurray: 5 Years in Fort McMurray
*Animal(s) (age, breed, name): Denali, 15 years old on June 22, Lab/Chow mix
*Interesting Facts about your animal(s): Denali is a cancer survivor after having gone through successful surgery on her mammories in Feb 2011. She is the sweetest natured dog and the cat even beats her up!! I had the priveledge of adopting Denali in Toronto. I was a public bus driver and one of the passengers, who was homeless, would regularly get on with her mother and beg for money. One night, he got on my bus with a beautiful blonde ball of fur..I asked him where he was taking the puppy and he said he was selling her to another homeless man downtown for $10…that was it for me… I gave him a $20 and carried her on my lap for the remainder of the shift..my husband and daughters fell in love with her too when I got home..she has been more of a child to me then a pet. I know that her days are coming to an end soon, which devestates me, however, I would rather suffer the pain of loosing her then to have never have had the joy of her friendship and love for the last 15 years..this doggy is so loved that when she developed cancer, we researched the best place for her surgery (Western Vet in Calgary), bought an rv so she would be comfortable for the drive to and back and proceded to stay a week there during her surgery and giving her enough time to recooperate so the drive back to Fort Mac would be comfortable for her..
*Animal(s) Favorite Treat: Denali’s favorite treat is pretty much anything that mommy and daddy share with her!
*Animal(s) Favorite Trick: We never really taught her to do tricks..we didn’t want her to have to “perform”..If i had to state a favorite trick, it would be her faking the occassional limp to get treats, forgetting she was limping and then starting it again after she wanted more!! She can be quite the actress!
As for my perspective on Adopting a rescue – my husband and I would have it no other way..in the future, we intend to get an older rescue dog so they may live out the remainder of their life being spoiled in comfort and love.
My favorite quote isn’t really a quote..it’s a song my husband made up to sing to her whenever she isn’t feeling well – too private to share <3
*Animal(s) (age, breed, name): Indiana Jones (Indy) 6 years old, Tabby Cat
*Interesting Facts about your animal(s): Indy is a ball of energy and loves to try to sneak outside. He has always been an indoor cat but has, on occassion, snuck out to try to play with insects..dragon flies are his favorite and he will jump in the air and spiral playing with them!
*Favorite Treat: Indy is very fussy and doesn’t like treats, other than the occasional bit of cat nip…
*Favorite Trick: His favorite trick is sneaking up into the bed to snuggle with either my husband or myself. The sneaking is over Denali as she is too old to climb up and has her feelings hurt when Indy does, so Indy waits until Denali is sleeping in the darkness of night to get his bedtime cuddles!!
Indy was a rescue from the Toronto Humane Society…my husband and I consider him another addition to our family and Denali considers him to be her pesky kid brother!!
If I were to ever again adopt a cat, then I can honestly say that a rescue is the only one we would!!
I have had several cats over the years..the first – Simba, was rescued as a stray..The next two were sisters – Peaches and Patches who a man was taking to be put down at the humane society-I grabbed them right away!! The third was a dying kitten -Evie, who I took home to be loved and spoiled for her remaining time..she only lived two months after I adopted her, but she will always hold a special place in my heart :'( – as do all of the beautiful animals that I have had the priveledge to share my life and home with.
