I am so excited about this blog post, I have been following Buddy’s journey for quite some time. It is very inspiring to see what people do for an animal in need, this continues to inspire me to keep helping at our shelter and encourage others to go and visit shelter& rescue’s in their communities. After finding FiveSibes on facebook last year I have been intrigued and inspired with everything Dorothy does for animals, including her own! This blog post is an exclusive interview about her latest book that was just released! I am so honoured to be the FIRST stop on the Buddy Blog Tour(Check Fivesibes out on facebook for other stops along the way). I hope you enjoy this post as much as I do :) But I first want to share one of my favorite rescue/shelter quotes:
If you can’t adopt – foster
If you can’t foster – sponsor
If you can’t sponsor – volunteer
If you can’t volunteer – donate
If you can’t donate – educate, network, and cross-post
Everyone can do something, large or small, to help save a life…
BOOK BLOG HOP – BUDDY THE CHRISTMAS HUSKY
*Who is filling out this interview?
The author, Dorothy Wills-Raftery
*What did you have to do with the book?
I am a one-stop-shop! I am the author, senior editor, producer, and publisher. I chatted with Buddy’s foster hu-mom, Shari “Mama Shay” Baillargeon, much throughout the development of the book to be sure I had his story correct and to be sure I had her input. She also gathered the photos that are included in the insert of the book that shows Buddy’s timeline from rescue to the present. I also worked closely with the illustrator for the right look of the illustrations to convey Buddy’s story, and worked together with my designer on the overall style, layout, and design of the book. I oversee the editing (I have a few very talented editors I work with), and work closely with a wonderful printer I’ve worked with for 20 years. I also hand package and mail each book with love!
*Who illustrated the book?
Barbara K. Slocum. Barbara is a very talented artist/illustrator/designer I’ve worked with and have been friends with for many years and whose work I love and respect.
*Who published the book?
I published the book through my small indie house, ArcticHouse Publishing.
*Who is the author for the book?
I am! (Dorothy Wills-Raftery, also known as the FiveSibesMom). I’ve been an author and photojournalist for more than 40 years. Buddy, the Christmas Husky is my third published book, and I am currently working on several other books this year, including two more FiveSibes™ Tales with another very talented illustrator and creator of the character versions of my FiveSibes, Michelle Littler. (What’s Wrong With Gibson? Learning About K-9 Epilepsy is my first FiveSibes™ Tale. Getting Healthy With Harley is getting ready for publication, and Cooking With Chloe is in progress). My EPIc Dog Tales: Heartfelt Stories About Amazing Dogs Living & Loving Life With Canine Epilepsy is in the editing states and tentative publication date is March 26, 2014—Purple Day for Epilepsy Awareness.
*When did the book launch?
The book was just released a few days before Christmas! This is the first “Blog Book Tour” stop! (Thank you for hosting it!)
*How long did it take from start to finish to produce/publish the book:
I began researching and talking with Buddy’s foster hu-mom, Shari, last year before she was a guest on my Dog Works Radio show, “The Sibe Vibe,” and then continued communicating with her throughout the year, with the final stages of editing and book design occurring this October and November, so a little over a year in all, from concept to completion.
*What is the book about?
After reading about Buddy through his Facebook page, his story and the photos Shari shared touched my heart and it’s a story—as an animal lover and a writer, photojournalist, and editor by trade—I thought should really be told. It’s an amazing story of how one abandoned and abused Husky (Buddy) was saved one Christmas Day (after being ignored by so many others) by a Good Samaritan and how an entire community of caring pet advocates from across the globe joined together through online networking to help his rescuer find a good home and raised funds to help with medical help so desperately needed. Buddy’s story really shows how people, complete strangers, can pull together to help save an animal in need. While it tugs at the heartstrings, especially the beginning, it is truly a heart warming story about a miracle Siberian Husky and all those people who helped him.
*Where can people get the book?
The book can be purchased through the ArcticHouse Publishing online store at www.ArcticHousePublishing.com. I’d like to mention that ArcticHouse is a very small one-person company I run and, currently, every book is hand packaged with great care and hand mailed. As a result, it may take a little longer than other online stores to process.
*What do you hope to accomplish with this book?
First, I hope this book will help bring awareness to helping abused and abandoned dogs like Buddy. Second, I hope to raise some funds from the book via a percentage of proceeds I will donate, post production costs, toward Buddy’s ongoing healthcare and then when his bills are paid current, and then to his “Buddy’s Buddies” that will help other animals in need through the University of Georgia (UGA) College for Veterinary Medicine. And thirdly, I hope it will move the reader emotionally as they tap into their compassion and love at being a part of Buddy’s life through the written word.
*Any other information you want to add?
Just that I’m very excited to be able to donate a percentage of proceeds, post production costs (as I fund the entire project myself up front), to help Buddy and others through his “Buddy’s Buddies” program at UGA, so I would love to sell a lot of books and be able to present Buddy’s hu-mom with a nice check to help Buddy and his “buddies! (and then some more checks!) Not only will readers have a wonderful book to add to their library, but their purchase will help a Husky in need.
