This next interview is with someone who seen my post on blogpaws about me looking for people to do blog swaps with. After she contacted me I explored her blog. I admire this lady! Her name is Sharon and what she has done for other animals including her own is inspiring. Her late dog Sophie (the inspiration for her blog) became paralyzed in the rear end and lived that way for 5 years. As I know first hand living with a special needs dog is sometimes challenging and her blog is here to let everyone know that it will be ok and there are people out there to help you go through the challenges.
*Who is filling out this Interview?
*Where are you from?
Las Vegas, NV
*Tell me a little about yourself?
I’m a freelance writer turned blogger, animal advocate and pet mom. Before starting my own blog, I wrote for Care2.com for 5 years about animal welfare and animal rights. In 2000 I was one of five animal lovers who started a rescue group in Las Vegas. It is called Heaven Can Wait Animal Society. We got our name because we wanted to save the “last day” cats and dogs from our city shelter that were scheduled to be euthanized. At that time our city was euthanizing 30,000 healthy adoptable pets a year. We soon adopted a new plan to stop these pets from giving birth to unwanted litters. We opened the only non-profit spay/neuter clinic in our state. To date we’ve fixed more than 92,000 cats and dogs and have reduced the euthanasia rate to nearly half. My work with the group revolves around as newsletter editor, blog editor and website editor. I am also the guardian to a rescue dog/ Shepherd mix named Cody and 3 semi feral cats that my husband and I trapped and socialized. They were deemed unadoptable and I couldn’t turn them back to live on their own. They are Spike, Sport and Tiger. Up until April 2013 my family also included my paralyzed dog Sophie and her BFF Shadow. We lost both last year. In addition I have one (human) son named Matthew.
*What is your blog called?
Lessons From A Paralyzed Dog
*When did you start blogging? And why?
I started my blog in Nov. 2013. The blog is a tribute to my dog Sophie who bravely endured 5 years of being paralyzed. I couldn’t let her life go unnoticed. It’s also about the lessons my family learned in taking care of her needs and my hope is that it will grow into a resource where owners of pets with special needs will come to share their stories and learn about basic care, diseases and current research.
*How often do you blog? Is it a set schedule or random posts?
I try to post Monday – Thursday
*What is your blog about?
My blog has 5 components: The life lessons I learned from taking care of Sophie, the stories of other pets living with disabilities, special needs pets waiting to be adopted, veterinary research or clinical trials and basics information about taking care of a handicapped pet.
*Do you have any animals, if so, name, age, breed and some interesting things about them?
Cody is a 10 year-old Shepherd/collie mix. He came from a hoarder before being rescued by Heaven Can Wait. He wasn’t abused, but he had never been socialized and was terrified of men. It took him about a year to warm up to my husband. Once at Heaven Can Wait he was enrolled in our Pups on Parole program where he lived with a woman inmate.
My 3 cats, Spike, Sport and Tiger are semi-feral. They were part of a trapping my husband and I did when they were about 10 weeks old. Heaven Can Wait treated them as part of our TNR program, but I couldn’t return them to fend for themselves after they were neutered. I worked for months socializing them….I know when my last tetanus shot was because of a bite. Fast forward six years later, they are my 3 little boys.
