*Where are you from?
*Animals(s) (Age, Breed & Name)?
8 y/o Boxer, Killian
7 y/o Dutch Shepherd, Jari
3 y/o Mastiff, Riona
2 y/o Mastiff, Fearghas
*Interesting Facts About Your Animal(s)?
Riona and Fearghas have both been diagnosed with Idiopathic Epilepsy and take medication five times a day to help prevent seizures.
*Animal(s) Favorite Treat?
All of my dogs LOVE bananas and apples! With meds five times a day, treats are huge. We get Gibbie Snacks and other healthy treats from House Wolf K9 Dog Biscuits. We’re careful of what we give them because of their epilepsy.
*Animal(s) Favorite Trick?
Fearghas will shake with you all day long! He loves to give paws…his really big paws.
*Where is your pet(s) favorite place to go?
Anywhere…they love their yard, they will ride in their truck all day. They don’t care where they go as long as they’re all together.
*Perspective on Adopting a Rescue?
Because of what we’ve been through with Riona and Fearghas and all that I have learned since this happened, I think Rescue is awesome. I didn’t know a lot about it until I started researching unethical breeders, etc. Too many dogs are given up because of health issues. I would be happy to give one a loving home.
*What’s your favorite thing to do with your dog (walks, going to a park, playing games etc.)?
Anything. Wherever you take the Mastiffs, they draw attention and they love everyone. I love watching them run, play, or chase each other. We are very thankful for every seizure free day. To take pictures of them running, playing and just being happy is my favorite thing.
“You never know how strong you are until being strong is the only choice you have”
*Favorite website to get pet information?
Since I knew nothing about Epilepsy prior to Riona’s first seizure, this website is very important to me. They’ve helped me tremendously. www.canine-epilepsy.com
*Do your animal(s) love to go for car rides?
They all love to go for rides and would ride around all day long.
*What’s your favorite animal product?
In our house I think the Nylabones are the favorite for toys/chewing.I also love the Ruffwear Webmaster Harness. We originally got it for Riona after TPLO surgery, but it’s proved itself useful for med changes and any ataxia that might accompany that. It’s a great harness to support and stabilize them when they’re wobbly.
*Why do you think volunteering at an animal rescue/shelter is important?
Like I said, I really didn’t know anything about rescues, shelters, commercial breeders, or puppy mills before I started researching unethical breeders due to the issues with the breeder Riona and Fearghas came from. There seems to be so many people breeding just for the money and so many dogs with no homes or just being abandoned. It is truly heartbreaking. In my family, a dog or any other animal isn’t temporary, it’s family and it’s a lifetime commitment. Too many animals don’t have that commitment from humans. It’s just really sad. Animals aren’t disposable. I applaud and admire the wonderful people dedicated to rescues and shelters.
*Anything extra you would like to add?
Anyone looking for a new pet addition to their family, please do your research and homework. Learn everything you can. Make sure it’s a lifetime commitment.
