*How was the book started and what was your inspiration?
My first book was a photography book on living with dogs. After researching and reading about the “Dogs of War,” the dogs who serve in the military and during wars, I decided to write my second dog book. This book is for children and it highlights messages about being unique, pet adoption, and loving dogs. I love dogs for so many reasons. Without a doubt, dogs have an intrinsic gift called, “unconditional love”. They truly are my best friend and many people feel the same way about their dogs.

*What is the book about?
The book is both about a dog shelter and unwanted dogs of a particular breed. I intentionally did not write about mutts but I focused on certain breeds that wind up in shelters. I mentioned some breeds that we rarely see anymore. So many breeds are quickly disappearing. The main character, Pellegrino, is an unusual dog in that he is pink. The book is about his journey to find a new home and also about Suzi, who runs the shelter, and how she goes from living in an apartment with a terrible landlord and no pets to finding her dream landlord and being able to adopt some of her dogs. It’s a bit about irony in that sense. It’s about the good, the bad, and the ugly of finding animals new homes.
I hope my book inspires more dog adoptions, especially of dogs that aren’t perfect or pure breeds, such as mutts, less favored breeds or those with a handicap or perceived shortcoming.
