The Abaco Shelter is entirely run on voluntary aid so, If you could kindly share this post, it would be greatly appreciated. If you can donate, it’s much appreciated!

*Who is filling out this interview?
Wendy Shankin-Cohen, President, Dr. Harvey’s

*What is a “Potcake”?
Potcakes are a mixed-breed dog type from the Turks and Caicos Islands and the Bahamas. Its name comes from the congealed rice and pea mixture that local residents traditionally fed dogs. Although appearance varies, Potcake dogs generally have smooth coats, cocked ears, and long faces.

*Tell me about Project Potcake and why has Dr. Harvey’s stepped up to help?
Dr. Harvey’s mission has always included supporting animal rescue and animal welfare. After a first time trip to the Caribbean early in 2015, we became aware of the indigenous dogs of the islands and their desperate situation.

Upon our return to the US, we met some extraordinary women who had been helping and rescuing Potcakes for years. These women told us about this small shelter in Abaco and how they really needed help. We were put in touch with the amazing volunteers there and we decided to see what we could do to help them directly. One of the US women is filmmaker and Potcake lover, Evelyn Vaccaro, who had a dream to make a documentary about the plight of these dogs and this shelter. Her passion for this mission touched us enormously and we decided to join forces with her to see her dream come true and help the shelter.

Abaco Shelter receives no government aide, has no running water and no electricity. They need food, medical supplies and money. Dr. Harvey’s will be bringing supplies on our first journey to the shelter along with the money raised in the GoFundMe campaign from generous donors.

*What is the name of the Animal Shelter in need of some help?
Abaco Shelter is a sanctuary for stray and abandoned dogs and is located at the site of the old Abaco dump, Abaco, The Bahamas. As the island’s only shelter, it is well maintained and affords green spaces for dogs to exercise whilst providing adequate shelter in the form of covered areas and handmade wooden kennels. These serve as secure places for pups to grow in safety, and havens for those in need of special care.

As the only facility of its kind on the island, Abaco Shelter is an extremely valuable resource. Not only does it provide a place for needy animals to live in safety, it also caters for their physical well-being. The shelter aims to spay and neuter all the dogs and provide them with essential medications and veterinary care. It facilitates adoptions, animal welfare education, and funds flights for pups en route to foster carers in the USA. In order to do this, and to provide all animals with a nourishing diet, financial donations from the public are essential. The shelter runs completely on voluntary aid.
