*What is the name of this business?
Bluestem Oral Care
*Who is filling out this interview?
My name is Erika Linden, and I am the marketing manager at Kane Biotech, the company behind bluestem oral care.
*How long have you been with the company for?
Not too long, I just started in July! I’m excited to share the bluestem story with the world.
*How long has this business been around for?
Kane Biotech is a Winnipeg based company, founded in 2001. We are a research and development company with 52 patents to our name. A few years back, someone had the great idea to use a patented technology – coactive+ – to fight plaque and tartar that is found in dogs (and cats) mouths.
*Why was it started?
Biofilms are present everywhere – from hospitals to food processing facilities to our own mouths. What is a biofilm, you’re wondering? (I was.) Bacteria like to live in colonies, called biofilms. These biofilms start with a surface – for example a metal or plastic or teeth – plus bacteria, moisture, and nutrients. The bacteria release a slippery, sticky substance in which they live and multiply. On teeth, it forms that icky ‘slime’ that is tough to get rid of. Our technology breaks down the slime, or the biofilm, which allows the bacteria to be killed.
*Do you have any animals? If so, name, breed and something interesting about them?
I think everyone in our office has dogs! Unfortunately, we are in a shared office space and it’s not dog-friendly. I’ve always been jealous of people who could take their dogs to work with them. I have two – both terrier crosses that we adopted from shelters. They are spirited and energetic – just as you would imagine terriers to be!
*What do you specialize in?
Kane Biotech specializes in Animal Health, although we have other human projects on the go as well. We’re working on developing a wound gel spray for the US army that can treat trauma wounds.
*What makes you different from other companies?
In a word – SCIENCE! So many animal health products are not backed by science. We started with science, and then looked to see where the technology could be applied. Our product has been independently tested many times, and all of our ingredients are human food grade approved.
*What types of products do you offer?
Bluestem water additive in four flavors, and a bluestem oral spray. We have some new and exciting products in our pipeline… stay tuned!

*What is the company’s mission?
As a new company I’m not sure we have something official, but I would say something like ‘Healthy mouths for all companion pets.’
*What is the price range?
$19.99 – $29.99
*Any special events coming up this year for you?
We are off to Toronto next week for PIJAC – the Pet Industry Joint Advisory Council of Canada. Whew! That is a mouthful! We are also exhibiting at the Winnipeg Pet Show at the end of October.
*What inspires you?
I love seeing all of the new pet products out there designed to make your pet healthier and happier. Lately there has been a push towards safe and effective products – not just shiny packaging. As a marketer, I do love shiny packaging… but what really matters is what’s inside.
*What do you plan to accomplish with your business in 2015?
We hope to have Bluestem available at local pet stores across the country! So far, we’ve been pretty successful on the west – BC and AB, and of course Manitoba, our home province. We are excited to forge relationships with east coast stores.
*Do you do any charity work?
We do. We like to give back locally, when we can. There are so many great causes out there – sometimes it can be overwhelming to choose. We’ve worked with the Edmonton and Calgary Humane societies, the BCSPCA, and many local shelters in Winnipeg.
